You'll be glad to know that, pretty much the day after I posted last week, I got TurnShip working again! Hurrah!

The problem turned out to be because, when you join a server, a "Game" (the map with the ships) is loaded; then I put the lobby on, and told it to load another game, which was being loaded on top without maps or ships. That was a fun one to work out.

I made some general bugfixes and additional progress on it too, things like:
  • Admin commands (kick, smite)
  • A colour bug that was making P1 green instead of blue
  • Fixed text input
  • Shutting down a server doesn't close the connected games any more

There are a few bugs to go, like making sure players are fully kicked, that sort of thing, and some stuff to add, like it sending your P&R username and a scrolling text chat.

In other news, me and P have been discussing things like the platformer (needs to be big and pretty), and an old idea we had for a postal service manned by monsters. Also, I wanted to highlight something about the two of us.

Prop likes big epic strategy games, preferably set in space (Homeworld), management tycoon games (OpenTTD), simplish shooters (Ikaruga, Captain Forever), that sort of thing.
However, I like big open adventure games, the prettier the better (Okami, Zelda: Wind Waker, Beyond Good and Evil), platformers (Mario, Sonic, Cave Story), RPGs and FPSs to a certain extent (Pokemon, TF2).

So far we've been making mostly strategy games with elements of adventure, because it's mostly been Propellor coming up with the concepts and then the two of us hammering them out into fuller ideas. However, the concept I'm thinking of most at the moment is this platformer, as the original idea was mine =D

I'm writing the music for it as the concept for my final album at uni; I'll post music here when I have some to show that I think is representative. The platformer itself will mostly be quite lighthearted (P tends to make things darker); I also want to invest the time and make it really look good and immersive. I'm determined that it will be the sort of game where you stop playing for a while just to examine the background and listen to the music. The plot will take you to lots of different worlds, each with strong character, as it started as "I need something to write an album about".

Right, that's all for now; next week maybe I'll have something to say about a game I'm trying to make to replace Waveform, that involves the dropping of balls.
